Abolition of Labour Inspection in Georgia – Consequences for Workers and the Economy

Labour inspection and workplace safety laws had to take a backseat in 2006 in Georgia after setting the focus on deregulation and economic growth. But with the EU-Georgian Association Agreement in place, labour inspection is slowly making a comeback. This paper looks back at the life-threatening consequences of the abolition of labour inspection for workers and challenges the notion, that the deregulation of workers’ labour rights is leading to higher employment and increasing foreign direct investments.
