Panel Discussion with Edelgard Bulmahn (Armenia)

The importance of education for democracy and peace was the topic of a panel discussion with Edelgard Bulmahn, Vice-Speaker of the German Bundestag and former German Minister of Education and Science.

Ms. Bulmahn emphasized that education goes beyond knowledge transfer, also comprising dialogue, emotional expression and creativity. While the state assumes a special responsibility for providing high quality education that is accessible to everyone, she sees education as the responsibility of society at large, not just the state. Her Armenian interlocutors, Arthur Ghazaryan from the Armenian Ministry of Education and Sciences and independent education expert Nvard Manasyan, stressed the special importance of education in the social transformation process in Armenia.
