Public Funding of Political Parties: What Is It Good For?

Public subsidies exert a positive effect on the functioning of a democracy – that is the core message Fernando Casal Bertoa (Associate Professor, School of Politics and International Relations at the University of Notthingham, UK) provides in his new publication “State financing for political parties”.

In his article, the author gives insights into the specific advantages of properly regulated public subsidies to political parties. Contrary to mainstream arguments, Casal Bertoa proves that subsidies in fact contribute to strengthening the legitimacy and sustainability of political parties. Furthermore, he gives advice on appropriate ways in order to implement these subsidies.

The article is published as part of an FES project on legislative reforms of Armenia’s political parties and has been discussed in a number of public hearings in the country.
