Social and Economic Policy in Armenia’s Parliamentary Elections

Against the background of the parliamentary elections on 2 April 2017, the CPFE in cooperation with the FES monitored and analysed the electoral programmes and the press conferences of the nine participating parties and alliances within a period of three months. The aim of the study was to establish the relative weight that social and economic topics played during the election campaign, as well as to research the variety of policy suggestions in these areas.

As it turned out, parties focussed more on economic than on social issues, and the main strategy to solve social problems was seen in increasing economic growth. Also, important topics such as workers’ rights, women’s rights or the necessity of implementing and strengthening a stable and sustainable industrial sector were almost absent from the agendas, and completely lacking in the political discourse.
